Everything You Need to Know About Getting an Alcohol License

An alcohol license allows you to sell and serve alcohol to people within your premises. It also includes ‘licensable activities’ like providing drinks and hot food to people between 11 pm and 5 am. You can also opt for dance, music, and other entertainment programs in your premises but each would need a separate permission. If you are also applying for an alcohol privilege, here are a few things that you should know about the process.

Personal or premises license

In the UK, you do not get a personal license to sell alcohol. Instead, a premises license is issued. This permit is also issued in the name of a person who can sell or serve alcohol but only within a specific premise. Therefore, you will have to opt for a premises license. You must be at least 18 years of age to apply for it if you are serving alcohol and food past 11 pm to members of a club, you will have to apply for a club premises license.

Who can apply for an alcohol privilege?

A minor cannot apply for alcohol permission. You must be at least 18 years of age to get a permit. Additionally, you should be a designated premise supervisor (DPS) of the place of where the permission to sell alcohol is being applied for. If you do not manage the place directly, you can appoint someone else as the DPS of the place before application.

A great part of customer service in restaurants is being able to provide hot food instantly. Diners want to taste your sumptuous food along with drinks. For this, ask your DSP to get in touch with good cooks. Also get in touch with a good commercial gas service provider like Flogas. Once an alcohol license is sorted and you get an awesome commercial gas service, expect your business to start making headlines.

How to apply for the license?

The application procedure is very simple. Simply gather the details of the person who gets the permission in his name along with the details of the DPS. Attach your operating schedule and a detailed plan of the premises and submit to your respective council.

After you have submitted the required documents, you must paste an application notice at the premises for at least 28 days. This is mandatory for all applicants.

Note that there is no fixed license fee. The fee will depend on the ratable value of your premises. It usually ranges from 100 pounds to over 1000 pounds. If your premise does not have a ratable value, it will usually pay the lowest fee applicable.

What happens after the license issue?

Once the permission has been granted, your DSP will have to display the license summary at the premises. An inspector can ask for a copy of your permission at any time. In this case, you will have to produce the entire document, not just the summary. Upon failing to produce the document, you could be fined up to 1000 pounds. However, if you carry on licensable activities within your premises without permission, you could even be sent to prison for 6 months.

You are not issued this permission for a limited duration. This document is valid forever, as long as you keep paying the annual fee.

The application procedure is very simple and you do not have to bear any hassles as well. If you plan to serve alcohol, it would be better to get permission instead of paying a fine and going to prison.
